Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948-1997)


Personal life

He was born in Faisalabad. He did his first public performance at the age of 15 at his father's Chelum. He became the head of the family qawwali party in 1971 and got his unique style of Sargam, khayal, and rhythm to his family's legacy. Khan went on to release movie scores and albums in Europe, India, Japan, Pakistan, and the U.S. He is involved in partnerships and trials with Western artists, becoming a well-known world music artist. He visited widely, performing in over 40 countries, In addition to popularizing qawwali music, he also had a large impact on present South Asian popular music, including Pakistani pop, Indian pop, and Bollywood music.


Career

He was a Pakistani lead singer, writer, and music instructor. He was mainly a singer of qawwali and a form of Sufi holy music. He is also known as "Shahenshah-e-Qawwali" (the King of Kings of Qawwali). He is considered by The New York Times to be the greatest qawwali singer of his generation. He was defined as the fourth greatest singer of all time in 2016. He was known for his vocal skills and could perform at a high level of intensity for several hours. He is usually recognized for leading qawwali music to international audiences.


Death

Khan was weighty in his later years. He had been seriously ill for several months, after traveling to London from his native Pakistan for treatment of liver and kidney problems, he was rushed from the airport where he died of a sudden cardiac arrest on 16 August 1997, at the age of 48. His body was Buried in Faisalabad. His wife, Naheed Nusrat, moved to Canada after the death of her husband, where she died on 13 September 2013.
